Marsala hospital offers pill to prevent HIV

The provincial health company in Trapani is enhancing its offer for the treatment and prevention of sexually transmitted diseases. The Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) pill is now available at the Infectious Diseases outpatient clinic at the Paolo Borsellino Hospital in Marsala, with the aim of reducing the risk of sexually transmitted HIV-1 infection. This additional prevention tool is targeted at HIV-negative individuals engaged in high-risk sexual behavior and has a significant impact on public health. In compliance with national and regional regulations, the Trapani Health Company is among the first healthcare organizations in Sicily to have actual availability of the medication and to have already activated the service. It is important to note that HIV and AIDS are not the same thing, as untreated HIV infection can lead to AIDS, which represents the advanced clinical stage of the infection caused by the human immunodeficiency virus found in the blood, genital secretions, and breast milk of infected individuals who are not receiving treatment. In 2021, there were 1,770 new HIV infection diagnoses, equivalent to 3 new cases per 100,000 residents. The highest incidence is observed among individuals aged 30-39.
