Marsala, Claudia Gusmano showcases “Mozza” at the ‘a Scurata festival.

“There is a young woman at sea on the bow of a fishing boat, she has been there for a long time and by choice. A generation of sailors is hers, men who have witnessed every sunrise and sunset of their world. Her childhood was spent hand in hand with her grandfather, a man who had the sea within him.” “Mozza” is a one-act play by and with Claudia Gusmano, featuring music by Ermanno Dodaro and lighting design by Manuel Monilu. It speaks of the wind, of being a woman, of freedom, and the weight of the land. It is the second show in the program of the 6th edition of the event ” ‘a Scurata cunti e canti al calar del Sole” Memorial Enrico Russo, conceived and organized by the artistic and cultural movement of the city of Marsala – M.A.C. The performance of “Mozza” is scheduled for Thursday, July 27th at 9:30 pm. Claudia Gusmano arrives in her hometown Marsala after winning the Best Actress award at the 16th edition of the “Bimbi Belli – Esordi nel cinema italiano” festival by Nanni Moretti, which concluded on June 20th at the Arena Nuovo Sacher in Rome.
“Mozza”, like the entire program, will be staged at the “Pellegrino 1880” theater – named after the main sponsor of the event – which has been redesigned this year with an embracing shape embraced by the splendid scenery of the Egadi Islands, among which the Sun leaves its mark in the colors that reflect between sky and pools in the ancient saltworks of Genna, where the stage made of tuff rocks, the wooden seats resting on bright salt steps, make up a sort of Island of Art, an Island within the island in front of the Egadi Islands, which emerge in the natural painting of the Stagnone from dusk to evening.
“With the death of her grandfather, Mozza’s destiny quickly reveals itself: a liberating scream, mistaken for a symptom of madness, and a psychologist diagnoses her with a simple and predictable case of seasickness on land. There is only one cure at that point and it is clear what needs to be done: ‘Mozza must be at sea’. Her fishing boat, equipped with an emergency bell, lacks, unbeknownst to Mozza, a fundamental part: the rudder. There is nothing left that depends on her will, neither to return nor to continue – explains Claudia Gusmano, who is the author, performer, and director of the play -. And nothing is taken for granted for a girl light enough for the sea but too fragile for the land, because the rule that ‘in life, everyone does not do what they want, but only what they can’ applies to everyone, including her.”
This is a show that promises to reveal scenarios beyond the visible and the imaginary, delving into a profound essence that tastes like sea salt and therefore fits perfectly with the place of its performance. “I wanted to tell this story that speaks of water too salty to drink and land too heavy to bear. It is a metaphor for the loneliness that embraces us when we begin to define our boundaries, and the seagull is a light that anchors us to the world, desiring us to be individuals but among others.”
