There is a new beach location that enters the ranking of the most sought-after beaches in Sicily. We are talking about Marina di Palma, a fascinating shoreline that stretches in the central-southern part of the Island, about 4 kilometers south of the center of Palma di Montechiaro. It is a series of sandy beaches protected by breakwaters, located just below the village of Marina di Palma, where fine sand and pebbles alternate. The coast is well equipped and offers all services for relaxation and dining.
Marina’s beach is the beach of the people of Palma (and not only): the atmosphere in high season is beautiful, cheerful, and lively. In the evening hours, the area transforms, part of the waterfront is closed to traffic and becomes the heart of the summer nightlife thanks to bars and clubs.
The sea is clear and perfect for children, as are all the services on the beach. What distinguishes this area is definitely the crystal clear water suitable for swimming enthusiasts but also for snorkeling.
A vacation in this area cannot ignore a visit to Palma di Montechiaro, where you can breathe the air described in The Leopard, the famous novel by Tomasi di Lampedusa who visited Palma in 1955. Here is how Tomasi describes Prince Fabrizio’s visit to the Monastery of the Benedictine Sisters, one of the must-see places: “In that place he liked everything, starting from the humility of the rough parlor with its vaulted barrel centered on the Leopard, with the small wooden wheel to send and receive messages, with the well-squared door that the King and he, the only two men in the world, could lawfully pass…”. When the Monastery was built that absorbed their first residence, the Tomasi family moved to the current Palazzo Ducale, which is located at the base of the staircase of the spectacular Mother Church of Palma and which, after a long period of neglect, has recently been restored and opened to the public. The eight large rooms on the first floor still have wooden ceilings with carved and painted coffers that, despite the damage and theft they have suffered, are very interesting. For example, the Arms Room ceiling is divided into 24 panels with as many different crosses belonging to the chivalric military orders, some of which existed only for a short time. The surroundings of Palma di Montechiaro offer suggestive remnants of the past: the Montechiaro Castle between Punta Bianca and Marina di Palma, the San Carlo Tower commissioned by Carlo Tomasi in 1639 to ensure the defense of the population from Barbary pirates from North Africa, the Hill of Calvary with the picturesque ruins of the Church of Santa Maria della Luce and the Zubbia Grotto, now an archaeological park. Nothing is missing for an interesting vacation between sea, relaxation, and culture. In the footsteps of The Leopard.
