M5s in Sicily: “Stop to floor-crossing at the Regional Assembly, sanctions for deputies”

“Stop to party-switching at the Regional Assembly. It is not acceptable for deputies, once elected, to switch from one party to another for personal gain, betraying the will of the voters who elected them. For this reason, we have presented a proposal to amend the Assembly’s regulations to provide penalties for turncoats,” say M5s deputies at the Regional Assembly Cristina Ciminnisi and Martina Ardizzone, the main signatories of the proposal.

“The practice of turncoating is unacceptable and widespread, with many politicians changing parties with impressive ease, perhaps moving to political formations with ideas and programs totally opposed to those favored by the voters who elected them to represent them in parliament. Moreover, these switches alter the representativeness of the parties, which must be guaranteed to all within the presidential offices. This is unacceptable. At the Regional Assembly, between the past legislature and the current one, there have been about thirty party switches. It is time to say enough, providing sanctions that serve as a deterrent to these switches.”

The sanctions referred to by Ardizzone and Ciminnisi are the loss of positions in the Assembly’s presidential offices and parliamentary committees.

According to the M5S proposal, these provisions would not apply when the cessation of membership in the parliamentary group is decided by the group itself or in the case of dissolution of the group.

“These sanctions,” say Ciminnisi and Ardizzone, “have been in operation in the Senate since July 2022 and have also become law in the Marche region on April 9th on a proposal by the M5s. We hope that these changes will also be successful here. It is time to try to restore ethics to politics, whose credibility is continuously undermined by scandals that engulf it with unacceptable frequency.”
