Lotta, poker at Giarre Meeting boys at Italian Under 17 Championships in Ostia

The athletes of the Giarre Meeting, led by coach Franco Sorbello, achieved a poker of Italian titles in Olympic wrestling. With the latest national titles won by the athletes at the Italian Under 17 Championships of Olympic wrestling last weekend at the PalaPellicone in Ostia Lido, the total medals have now risen to four. This includes gold at the Women’s Absolutes won by Bianca Contrafatto in the 65 kg category, and gold at the Juniors in 2023, along with the overall title.

The young cadets of the Giarre Meeting shone on Saturday, February 24, with Sara Sorbello taking first place in the 61 kg category, Gabriele Vecchio in the 60 kg category, and Gabriele Pavone in the 71 kg category. This achievement led to their selection for a national training camp starting on February 28 in Rome, ahead of the European Championships. Bianca Contrafatto will also join the national team for a training camp from March 6, hosting various European nations.

Upon returning to Giarre, the team was warmly welcomed for their achievements. Coach Sorbello expressed his pride, stating, “I am very satisfied with the performance of my athletes because, in addition to their excellent performance, they have shown growth both technically and tactically. Hard work pays off and the athletes have proven that by training with dedication and tenacity, while continuing to study and attend school. As I have always maintained, competitive sports are not an alternative to educational commitment.”

The young champions of the Giarre Meeting will once again compete in Rome at the Italian Junior Olympic wrestling Championships on March 24.
