Lipari’s Asp boosts struggling hospital with €6 million investment

The Asp aims to revitalize the Lipari hospital, the only one for seven islands that in the summer host over 100,000 vacationers. The general director Giuseppe Cucci has announced an investment of six million euros which includes the adaptation and renovation of the structure, the activation of the hyperbaric chamber, the installation of the MRI, the expansion of the surgical area with two intensive care units in addition to the existing one, the renovation of the facade and the revision of the fire system.
The staff will also be strengthened. Starting from November 1st, Maurizio Pizzo from Rome will start working in surgery, who has been in service in Pantelleria for six years and is married to a resident of Lipari. At a congress on pediatrics and neonatology held on the island, the president Caterina Cacace announced “commitments in health protection paths for newborns and children in all realities, including those of the smaller islands.”
Furthermore, the Anspi aims to identify innovative and common lines in order to develop healthcare microsystems for the smaller Italian islands that are able to apply the principles of the national healthcare system clearly and consistently, guaranteeing high-level and fair healthcare even in marginalized territories, as provided for by the constitution. This is the objective of the Favignana Charter, which will be elaborated on the occasion of the twenty-first congress of the national healthcare association of the small islands. During the two-day event, scheduled at the ex Florio establishment in Favignana on Friday, October 11th and Saturday, October 12th, about a hundred general directors of Asl and Asp with jurisdiction over various Italian islands, experts, and institutional representatives will discuss organizational models, operational tools, and system opportunities.
