Lime and coliform fish: fish company seized


On disposal
of the District Prosecutor of the Republic of Catania, staff of the
Harbor Master's Office – Catania Coast Guard, together with command personnel

years, administrator and legal representative of the same.

The investigations had
started at the end of 2018 following a maritime police check
by the Catania Coast Guard and aimed at verifying compliance
of national and community legislation on the fish supply chain at the aforementioned
company, which deals with the storage, processing and processing of fish,
crustaceans and molluscs. Following the emergence of the first irregularities,
proceeded with the integration of the inspection activities related to the profiles of
compliance with environmental regulations by the military of the operational unit
ecological, which through the analysis of the territory, have managed to

illegally by the holder of the fish warehouse for all the procedures of
processing of fish and cleaning of premises.

Over the
investigation showed that the company indicated has adulterated,
counterfeit and placed on the market large quantities of products
foodstuffs, in particular stockfish and cod, using illicitly,
as ingredients of the food product, of building lime instead of
lime for food use, as well as large quantities of water coming illegally
by an adjacent artesian well which, following the analysis on the quality of the
waters from the aforementioned well, performed by the Asp of Catania, has
highlighted the presence, in the same, of a high rate of coliform bacteria.

Furthermore, in the
during the inspection visits to the company premises, were identified by the
Judicial police operating further offenses, including criminal offenses, between
which environmental crimes and violations of security rules
workplaces, such as the absence of suitable authorization documentation
download and documentation certifying the monitoring samples
of the waters used for the processing of the fish product, in that, a
unlike what was declared to the control bodies, the company does not
it was limited to the conservation and marketing of fish products only,
but also to the processing, transformation, smoking and packaging of the

video surveillance cameras facing the workplace,
without there having been specific authorization from the competent
Labor Inspectorate.
