Libertà station on Palermo’s railway loop to open on October 28

From October 28th, the Libertà stop on Via Lazio (Via Sicilia) in Palermo will be active, along the metropolitan line that connects Notarbartolo with Giachery. This is a step forward for the completion of the railway ring (metroferrovie) which includes eight stops along 6.7 kilometers of urban track, mostly underground.

The Libertà stop is between Notarbartolo station (part of the railway loop) and Imperatore Federico stop. According to Rfi, the start of operations will be on Sunday 27th, although metro services will be suspended that day. The completion of the section connecting Giachery to Politeama (1.6 kilometers, with a single track) is expected by the middle of next year.

Rfi states that “all structural works have been completed and the finishing touches on the tunnels (sidewalks and water disposal), stops (masonry, flooring, and cladding), and system works along the line and in passenger buildings are nearing completion.” The Porto and Politeama stations will be opened, completing about two-thirds of the railway ring (at a cost of 150 million euros).

The connection of Giachery station to Politeama will mark the completion of the first phase of the project. The second phase involves the line from Politeama to Notarbartolo station (1.6 kilometers of track with 800 meters of tunnel to be excavated mechanized by TBM). The Turrisi Colonna (Lolli) stop will be built. The works contract (worth 90 million euros) was awarded in December 2023 to the consortium led by D’Agostino Costruzioni Generali, Bonifica, and Prometeoengineering.

The detailed design was awarded in February, with preparatory activities starting on September 19th. The start of operations is scheduled by the end of 2028. The extraordinary government commissioner for the project is Christian Colaneri, director of Strategies and Planning at Rfi.
