A ferry, the Cossyra, which connects Lampedusa with Porto Empedocle, had to be towed and transferred to the port of Augusta after a fire broke out in the engine room. The fire occurred while the ferry was 5 miles south of Linosa and was heading towards Porto Empedocle with 177 people on board. The ferry will remain out of service for at least a month. To ensure minimal disruptions for commuters, the Sansovino ferry from Porto Empedocle will now be providing morning services to the largest of the Pelagie Islands. In the evening, the Galaxy ferry will be used, as its lease expired yesterday.
