Lampedusa handed over to Africa: Lega in turmoil over Pontida t-shirt slogan

Angela Maraventano, former senator of the League party and a native of Lampedusa, along with the deputy mayor of the island, Attilio Lucia, have called on Matteo Salvini to apologize to Lampedusa. This comes after a League party supporter displayed a t-shirt at a rally in Pontida, which read “Stop naval blockade! Give Lampedusa to Africa.” The supporter went on to say that he preferred war over immigration and that children in Donbass were safer than those in Milan. Lucia and Maraventano both expressed their displeasure with these comments, with Lucia urging Salvini to defend the island and its people. Maraventano, who was once a member of the League party herself, criticized Salvini for his failure on immigration. She had previously left the party after making an unfortunate comment regarding the mafia’s role in defending the territory. Maraventano’s comment resulted in a conviction for incitement to commit a crime.
