The Italian Coast Guard reports on their rescue operation to save shipwrecked migrants in Lampedusa. It all began yesterday afternoon when the Coast Guard received a report of migrants stranded on a cliff. Two coast guard boats were deployed to the scene and managed to rescue 40 people and an unconscious child. Sadly, resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful. Search and rescue operations are ongoing. Additionally, a distress call was received for a fishing boat carrying 576 migrants. Bad weather conditions made it unsafe to transfer the migrants, so the fishing boat was escorted to the port of Lampedusa by coast guard and finance guard naval units.
