Investigation of the nursing home in Caltanissetta: daughters of elderly resident saw her mistreated and decided to report
Thanks to the two daughters of an elderly resident of the San Michele nursing home in Caltanissetta, the terrible conditions of the facility and the abuse suffered by the elderly were brought to light. The two women noticed strange behavior from the owner and staff of the facility, and after transferring their mother to another nursing home, they went to the police to report what they had seen. They reported that their mother was always poorly groomed, smelly, and covered in urine, as well as dressed inappropriately for the season.
An incident in particular alarmed the two women: they found their mother with a visible bruise on her face and severe shoulder pain. The owner claimed it was arthritis and instructed an employee to administer an anti-inflammatory without consulting a doctor. Another resident of the facility told one of the women that their mother had spent the night on a small couch, but was immediately silenced by the staff. The elderly woman also appeared drowsy and absent in front of relatives and other residents, leading family members to suspect the use of tranquilizers.
This prompted an investigation that uncovered cases of elderly individuals being neglected, sedated, and in some cases, even imprisoned. Four people were arrested and placed under house arrest by the carabinieri in Caltanissetta, all charged with kidnapping, unlawful practice of a medical profession, and neglect of the elderly residents of a nursing home in Caltanissetta. The investigation revealed that the nursing home lacked proper organizational and hygiene-sanitary requirements, with uncovered toilets, few bathrooms for disabled individuals, and non-functioning air conditioners. Adequate professional figures were also missing.
To cut costs due to the shortage of staff, tranquilizers were administered without medical prescription to elderly residents, especially during nighttime hours. Instances of kidnapping were documented, where patients were confined to their beds using iron grilles as barriers, preventing them from moving during the night. The nursing home was seized by the authorities, and medical personnel participated in the operation to verify the conditions of the elderly residents.
