Investigation into fatal drunk driving accident on Palermo-Sciacca road

Miriam Janale, a 23-year-old woman, is being investigated for vehicular manslaughter and personal injury for an accident that occurred on the Palermo Sciacca road, where her Fiat Punto crashed into a guardrail. The accident resulted in the death of her 16-month-old son Abd Rahim Gharsallah and 20-year-old Selma El Mouakit, the boy’s aunt. Janale, who was brought to the hospital in critical condition, has been discharged from the intensive care unit and has returned home. She is now receiving psychological support after learning of her son’s death.

The investigation is being conducted by the Carabinieri of Monreale, who have found that Janale had a blood alcohol level of 1.35 micrograms per liter at the time of the accident, nearly three times the legal limit of 0.50.

A candlelight procession was held in the town to honor the victims, and the local community has come together to support the North African family who has lived in the area for decades. The bodies of the victims were purified and bandaged in accordance with Islamic funeral rites, with the eldest woman in the community overseeing the washing ceremony in the presence of the imam. The bodies were placed in two coffins, one white and one brown, each with a copy of the Quran on top. The mayors of San Cipirello and San Giuseppe Jato were present at the procession.
