Increased surveillance in risky areas of Palermo’s historic center.
The new prefect of Palermo, Massimo Mariani, presided over his first meeting of the Provincial Committee for Public Order and Safety, with the participation of the heads of the police forces, Mayor Roberto Lagalla, and other representatives of the municipal administration. One of the topics discussed was the so-called “malamovida,” which mainly affects the areas of the historic center. The decision was to maintain and strengthen the control measures already in place to combat predatory crimes and all forms of violence, as well as to counter drug abuse, alcohol abuse, and illegal commercial activities. The Committee planned further services with inter-force operational modules. Gathering points for nightlife will be monitored, including specific anti-drug services with the help of dog units. In the months of October and November, 3,003 people were checked and 9 people were investigated, with one arrest. 573 vehicles were also inspected, resulting in 97 fines and 20 administrative seizures. 88 public venues were inspected, resulting in 71 administrative fines (for a total of 182,743 euros) and 17 administrative seizures. Throughout the year, nine closure orders for venues were issued.
