In English: Palermo, the new season of Teatro Massimo will open with love and passion.

The color that will dress the Teatro Massimo in Palermo for this new season of operas and ballets, starting from November 22, will be passionate red. From the elegant and sophisticated theater café, the superintendent Marco Betta and the president of the Teatro Massimo foundation, Mayor Roberto Lagalla, announce the 2023/24 program, characterized by two great love and death stories closely linked to each other, as well as tributes and great returns.
Taking the stage of the new campaign will be Romeo and Juliet and Tristan and Isolde, two stories that have their roots in the Middle Ages but are still relevant today. The first will be reinterpreted by the Israeli director and choreographer Idan Choen: the couple of protagonists will be formed by two women who love each other and represent different points of view on femininity. The Russian mezzo-soprano Maria Kataeva will portray Romeo, making her debut in the role, and will alternate with the young Sicilian artist Anna Pennisi, who already has excellent international experience playing Juliet’s lover. Juliet will be interpreted by Marina Monzò, also making her debut in the role, and will alternate with Francesca Pia Vitale. The events of the two operas conflict the individuals and their choices with the pressures of the society that surrounds them.
The program continues with Turandot and Madama Butterfly, paying tribute to Puccini on the centenary of his death. These will be the gravitational centerpieces, along with lesser-known titles that have been absent from the capital for too long: thus, there will be space for Elisabetta, regina di Inghilterra, a serious opera by Rossini, which Leyla Gencer starred in 1971, and Les pecheurs de perles. These performances have been absent since 1966, and to these will be added the great novelty of Lady Be Good by George Gershwin, which has never been to Palermo before. Completing the puzzle will be three ballets inspired by fairy-tale characters such as Snow White, Prokofiev’s Cinderella, and a new Peter Pan.
“A new great season characterized by performances and stories that have made their mark in the history of opera,” said Mayor Roberto Lagalla. “We hope to repeat the same success as the just concluded season. The arch under which this constellation of musical notes unfolds is that of love. It is a message that calls for unity, elegance, and civil coexistence: once again, the Massimo is a cultural attraction that offers itself to the people of Palermo, Italy, and abroad.”
The new schedule will also include a concert program, starting on November 15 with Giufà, featuring master and music director Omer Meir Wellber on the piano and accordion accompanying the voice of Mert Sungu. The program will continue with a tribute to Maria Callas.
The presentation was also an opportunity to meet with the trade unions, who are in a state of agitation. “We always have a great relationship of dialogue with them,” emphasized Betta. “The workers are the Teatro Massimo, so labor relations are constant and ongoing. This new season opens up an important vision because we are increasing production and have a series of important artistic centers, not only Tristan and Isolde but also Giacomo Puccini, on the centenary of his passing next year.”
