History, art, and nature in Calatafimi Segesta

In line with the non-motorized mobility plan approved in Sicily in 2005, the Regional Department of Tourism, Communications, and Transport has identified disused railway lines and minor roads as priority infrastructures for the creation of an alternative, low-impact transport network known as “soft mobility.” In this context, the idea was born to convert the disused fascist-era railway line “Kaggera – Vita – Salemi” into a “greenway,” a cycling and walking path that winds through a charming landscape that tells the story of the Calatafimi-Segesta territory from antiquity to the present day. A continuous discovery that allows you to learn about exceptional historical, archaeological, and geological evidence and admire lush orange and olive groves, artifacts related to peasant life, and civil engineering works connected to the functioning of the railway line.

Some of the highlights along the path include the Sanctuary of Contrada Mango, the Gardens of Kaggera, the Ponte Patti Station, the Contrada Canale Fountain and Rio Fountain, civil engineering works, the Contrada Margi Gypsum, the Roman Cry Monument, the Archpriest’s Mill, and the Municipality of Vita. In particular, the Monument Pianto Romano, commemorating the famous battle of Calatafimi fought on May 15, 1860, and the Archpriest’s Mill, telling the story of grain milling in the area, stand out as significant historical sites. The Municipality of Vita, located at the foot of Monte Baronia, is known for its beautiful fountains and murals, as well as the historic Daidone Palace and Madonna del Rosario Church. Additionally, the Feudo del Sicomo on Mount Baronia provides a forested area ideal for picnics, hiking, and mountain biking.
