Hills of Agrigento on fire: fear among residents, firefighters in action

The hills of Agrigento are on fire. In particular, the area of Piano Gatta, near the municipal cemetery, has been engulfed by flames, destroying hectares of Mediterranean scrub. The flames, fueled by the wind and high temperatures, spread within minutes and a massive intervention by firefighters, forestry officials, and civil protection has already begun overnight.

The fire has caused panic and fear among those living nearby, as there are several country houses in the area. The intentional nature of the fires is not ruled out: someone may have ignited the flames from the undergrowth covering the land.

In the past few days, numerous fires have occurred in the province of Agrigento, requiring a large-scale effort by firefighters from both local stations and the provincial command.

In Saraceno, Ravanusa, a helicopter and a water bomber intervened to extinguish flames that started from undergrowth and spread to the demesne wooded area, burning approximately three hectares of vegetation. The firefighters from the Canicattì station and forestry officials were also active. The carabinieri, under the coordination of the Prosecutor’s Office, have initiated investigations.
