High traffic in Sicily during the last weekend of August: risky roads highlighted.

The fourth and final weekend of August is expected to have heavy traffic as people return home from their vacations. An estimated 11 million vehicles are predicted to travel through the Central-Northern regions of Italy on Saturday and Sunday, with peak traffic reaching almost half a million during rush hours. There will also be traffic in Sicily, particularly in Palermo, Catania, and Messina. Long queues may occur at the entrances of cities and at Boccetta for ferry crossings. The Syracuse-Gela and Caltanissetta-Agrigento roads are also expected to be busy. In the previous weekend, Anas, the Italian infrastructure company, responded to 564 mechanical assistance calls and 113 accidents. Eleven fires were reported in the surrounding areas, all in the South, particularly in Puglia. The A2 “Mediterranean Highway” had significant traffic, with nearly 228,000 vehicles passing through the “Pontecagnano-Battipaglia” section, over 169,000 between “Battipaglia and Eboli,” and 98,000 in the final stretch in Campania. The traffic then decreases to about 68,000 vehicles in the Apennine section until it joins with SS18 “Tirrena Inferiore” near Falerna, where the number of vehicles registered increases to 95,000, gradually decreasing to over 57,000 at Villa San Giovanni. In Sicily, there were over 104,000 vehicles on the A29 in Cinisi and 70,000 on the Catania-Siracusa road in Augusta. Overall, there has been a 2% increase in traffic compared to last year, with a higher number of Sunday travels. The number of ongoing construction sites during the summer mobility plan has been reduced to 811, representing 74% of the total projects. Trucks are prohibited from transit tomorrow from 8 am to 4 pm and on Sunday from 7 am to 10 pm. Anas has over 2,200 resources, including technical and operational staff, monitoring the traffic 24/7.
