Giuseppe Sorbello, former regional councillor involved in previous legal investigations

Giuseppe Sorbello, former regional councilor and former mayor of Melilli, in the province of Siracusa, is one of the 12 arrested in the context of the Asmundo operation, an investigation coordinated by the magistrates of the third area of the District Prosecutor’s Office of Catania. He is currently under house arrest. Sorbello is accused of, during the 2022 municipal elections in Melilli, “accepting the promise of obtaining votes in exchange for money and the commitment to work to facilitate the release of the son of an affiliate.” However, Sorbello did not win and Giuseppe Carta, a regional deputy with the Mpa party, was elected with 75% of the votes.

Giuseppe Sorbello, also known as Pippo, has served as a councilor and assessor in Melilli on multiple occasions. He has also been a regional deputy in the Ars and assessor for Territory and Environment in the government led by Raffaele Lombardo. In the past, he has been involved in other judicial investigations: in 2012, he was served with a notice of guarantee by the Carabinieri for vote buying in an investigation by the District Anti-Mafia Prosecutor’s Office of Catania. He was a regional deputy for the Udc party and decided to resign from his position as vice-group leader in the Sicilian regional assembly and suspend all party responsibilities. In 2018, he was acquitted. Additionally, he has been involved in a long-standing dispute with Ias, the entity that manages the Priolo wastewater treatment plant, where he was an employee and board member.
