Four large bullets from World War II found in the garden of a nursery school in Acireale

In the garden of a private nursery school in the center of Acireale, four large unexploded war shells dating back to World War II were accidentally found. The discovery was made by a collaborator who immediately raised the alarm. The local Carabinieri rushed to the scene, secured the area, and called in the bomb disposal experts from the provincial command of the Army to remove the large ammunition. The shells, caliber 47, will be detonated in the coming days in a disused quarry by the Army’s special unit. The nursery school, attended by about thirty children, resumed normal activities after the safety operations were completed. Social media groups in Acireale are reminding people that the clearance of war ordnance was one of the first actions of the Allied administration, starting in August 1943. The British highlighted the danger of leaving war ordnance behind during retreats. The abandonment of these devices caused numerous accidents, including the explosion of a shell that killed 11 children in Piazza Agostino Pennisi on January 21, 1944.
