The first case of monkeypox in Sicily was diagnosed in Palermo, at the Civic hospital, by the infectious disease specialist Tullio Prestileo, who directs the Infectious Pathologies Operating Unit in vulnerable populations.

The patient, a forty-year-old from the Sicilian capital, contracted the disease in London about ten days ago due to a contact with a positive and suffered the first symptoms last Thursday.
Today the examination performed at the virology laboratory of the Policlinico di Palermo by professors Giovanni Giammanco and Donatella Ferraro confirmed the diagnosis.
