The first case in Sicily of monkeypox was diagnosed in Palermoat the Civic hospital, by the infectious disease specialist Tullio Prestileo, who directs the Infectious Pathologies Operating Unit in vulnerable populations.
The patient, a forty year old from the Sicilian capital, contracted the disease in London, about ten days ago, due to a contact with a positive and suffered the first symptoms last Thursday.
Today the examination performed at the virology laboratory of the Policlinico di Palermo by professors Giovanni Giammanco and Donatella Ferraro confirmed the diagnosis.
Last May there were two suspected cases at the Policlinico di Palermo, but after the investigations the two patients had tested negative for specific tests.
