Four helicopters, fire brigades, forestry and civil protection teams are fighting a large fire in the outskirts and residential areas of Nicosia. As a precautionary measure, some families have been asked to evacuate their homes on Marcello Capra street, a part of the city’s road network that is now closed to traffic. The flames started in the Mammafiglia area, where the city’s wastewater treatment plant is located, but has never been operational and has been abandoned. The fire quickly spread to the Santa Lucia area, climbing up the slopes towards Capra street, and eventually reached the slopes near the clock tower.
