Few campsites but a lot of waste, the Romagnolo beach in Palermo is in a state of degradation.

Few tents but lots of garbage. The phenomenon of encampments on the Romagnolo beach in Palermo is not exploding (at least for now) but the frame of waste remains the same. Due to the winds that have characterized the weather in recent days, the “illegal vacationers” have desisted, but the district council warns: “Although at the moment the traditional encampment seems to have slowed down, we are concerned that in the coming days, as soon as the wind calms down, the beach may be attacked again,” says Giuseppe Federico, president of the Second District. “We are waiting to understand what decisions will be made in the conference that is taking place right now. We have taken some actions by closing some gaps with sand mounds and putting chains in other access points.”

Preventive measures are being taken to prevent bathers from reaching the beach with their own vehicles: every year, in fact, in addition to the dozens of tents and barbecues that pop up on the beaches, there are also as many cars and motorcycles parked on the shorelines. “Here on the south coast, some people think they can swim with their car,” emphasizes Federico, “or use it as an extension of their tent. Vigilance must remain high.”

Therefore, control remains the central issue: “If the territory is abandoned, it becomes no man’s land,” continues the representative of the District. “By doing so, we witness the spread of these harmful traditions for everyone.” Sicurtransport, a company responsible for surveillance and security, has come to the rescue and provided over 70 controllers who now oversee Amat public transportation. The company has decided to donate two smart cameras to record and report cars that enter the beaches.

“In the coming days, we will have a service conference with Councilor Maurizio Carta, the port authority, and the municipal police,” says the president of the first district, “to integrate them and obtain authorization for the installation of cameras.”

And who knows, perhaps they can also be useful for waste management. Romagnolo continues to be invaded by garbage: on every sidewalk and stretch of beach, one encounters bags, cans, beer bottles, and chairs. In the beach grove, there are also small barbecue spots created with stones. “Unfortunately, some people still resist and persist despite the cleanup efforts,” emphasizes district councilor Giovanni Colletti. “Fortunately, however, there seems to be an increasing awareness of the common good. We have seen a lot of sensitivity from the citizens.”

In recent months, an initiative has also been undertaken by planting warning signs in dialect on the beach. “They want to send a strong and clear message,” says Colletti, “but many are realizing that being able to sunbathe at home without having to go elsewhere is a plus.”
