Fear in Porto Empedocle: Migrant Ferry Crashes into Pier, No Injuries Reported

Yesterday (12 August), a total of 1,050 migrants were transferred from the Lampedusa hotspot to Porto Empedocle and Augusta by ferries, leaving 2,127 migrants still hosted in Lampedusa. The motonave Galaxy, carrying 760 North Africans, had difficulty docking in Porto Empedocle and was unable to open the gate until after 9 PM. Fortunately, there were no injuries. The Prefecture of Agrigento is currently planning new transfers to be conducted in the coming hours. During the night, 277 migrants arrived on Lampedusa, with six boats carrying 28 to 54 people rescued by Coast Guard patrol boats. One boat carrying 17 Tunisians managed to directly reach the Madonnina pier. These migrants, mainly from Congo, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Guinea Conakry, Nigeria, Senegal, and Mali, reported departing from Gabes, Sfax, and Mahdia in Tunisia, paying anywhere from 1,500 to 6,000 Tunisian dinars. In the span of 24 hours, there were a total of 27 landings on the island, involving 718 migrants.
