Farewell to Barbara Bufardeci, women’s water polo national team manager

The world of water polo is in mourning for the death of Barbara Bufardeci, team manager of the women’s national team and vice president of the Circolo Canottieri Ortigia. She was born in Syracuse on December 1st, 1965, and passed away after a long illness. She had been with the national team since 2013. There has been an outpouring of condolences in the wake of her passing. She was instrumental in the success of the women’s national water polo team, being described as a second mother to the players. She was present for major victories, including a silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics and bronze medals at the 2015 Kazan World Championship and 2016 Belgrade European Championship. Despite her illness, she continued to support the team, even during their recent successes at the 2022 Split European Championships and the 2023 Fukuoka World Championships. Her funeral will be held on Monday at 4 pm at the church of San Salvatore in Syracuse.
