The garbage emergency that had been going on for weeks on the island of Vulcano has finally ended. A successful operation was carried out to collect the waste, especially in the seaside village of Gelso, where locals, restaurant owners, vacationers, and tourists had been complaining about the health risks. Three companies were involved in the island’s cleaning efforts, bringing in three compacting trucks and two mini compactors from Lipari, along with 10 operators. The companies involved were Ecoburgus, Siculcoop, and Eolian Service. Santino Serrato, a coordinator for one of the companies, responded to the recent service failures, particularly addressing the accusation made by the local government that four sanitation workers were unexpectedly absent due to illness. Serrato emphasized that as a union representative, he couldn’t ignore such accusations against hardworking employees who had not shied away from their duties. He also offered to provide proof, such as medical certificates, to refute any doubts about the workers’ conditions. Lastly, Serrato noted that if the absence of these workers had caused such chaos on the island, they had already been replaced.
