Drug and mobile phones in prison in Augusta, arrests and searches extended to Friuli

An operation by the Guardia di Finanza and Polizia Penitenziaria is targeting an organized drug trafficking network in the Augusta prison in Siracusa, Italy. The operation, named ‘Alcatraz’, is led by the district anti-mafia directorate of the Catania Prosecutor’s Office. 11 individuals are being targeted with precautionary measures, including charges of illegal access to communication devices by inmates. Over 80 personnel from the Guardia di Finanza and Polizia Penitenziaria are involved in the operation across Sicily, Calabria, and Friuli Venezia Giulia, with support from other investigative units. The measures were ordered by the Catania court based on indications of drug trafficking and drug distribution within the Augusta prison, as well as illegal access to communication devices by inmates.
