PALERMO – Nico Bonomolo wins, with his “Maestrale”, the David di Donatello 2022 Award in the short films section.
The work of the director from Bagheria therefore rises to the top step of Donatello’s David, after being preferred to four other works in the running (“Diorama” by Camilla Carè, “The last turns off the light” by Tommaso Santambrogio, “Night romana ”by Valerio Ferrara and“ Pilgrims ”by Farnoosh Samadi and Ali Asgari) all of great value.

As in the tradition of the most important Italian film award, the best short film was announced together with the nominations for the other sections.
To communicate the victory of “Maestrale” was Piera Detassis, President and Artistic Director of the Academy, who also added “I think it is the first time that an animated short film has won the Award and, therefore, we still have a different genre to be shown in the nominations and in the panorama of our cinema “.

“Maestrale – says the director – is a film that talks about the need for new life and does so through a narrative in which the drawing, often rarefied and in black and white, contributes, together with a suspended temporal dimension, to outline a oneiric dimension which opens the way to different and highly personal interpretations.
The story I wanted to tell is that of a man who goes to work and suddenly sees a boat for sale; so, attracted by the boat and helped first by dreams and then by memories, he leaves and sails towards a destination, until the mistral, which is a cold and impetuous wind that blows with power, forces him to a makeshift landing.
It is here that he meets, perhaps, a woman and is confronted with a new story, a new beginning.
Because everything starts again where everything seemed to be over ”.

“It is not the first time that I arrive, with one of my works, at the David di Donatello – he continues – already in 2018 my short film” Confino “was nominated for the Award, but obviously winning the most important statuette in Italian cinema is quite another what.
I am happy, both for me and for those who believed in my new work, starting with Salvo Ficarra, Valentino Picone and Attilio De Razza who produced it, to pass on to all the artists who have made a decisive contribution to the success of the short film.
The award is nominally by Nico Bonomolo, but in fact also by all of them.
Nico Bonomolo was born in Palermo in 1974.
Since 2008 he has been supporting the cinema of auteur animation with painting and drawing.
He made the short film “Lorenzo Vacirca”, the New Italian Cinema Events Award at the 55th Taormina Film Festival and other works, all appreciated in the main international festivals.
In his palmares a Special Mention to the Nastri d’Argento, the Gryphon Award for the best animated short film at the Giffoni Experience, a nomination for the Golden Globes and the Bruce Corwin Award at the Santa Barbara Festival, in the United States, which did so.
run for an Oscar nomination.
