The plenum of the Superior Council of the Judiciary has decided, with the yes of the whole assembly and one abstention, the appointment of the deputy prosecutor of Catania, Francesco Puleio, as prosecutor of Ragusa, a position left vacant by Fabio D’Anna, appointed attorney general of Caltanissetta. Puleio was also a candidate for prosecutor of Catania. On July 17th, he obtained 12 votes against the 13 of Francesco Curcio, who has not yet taken office. Puleio has appealed to the Lazio Regional Administrative Court against Curcio’s appointment.

Also, the two candidates for that role have done the same: the two deputy prosecutors of the Catania prosecutor’s office, Ignazio Fonzo and Sebastiano Ardita. The prosecutor of Potenza was elected with one vote advantage – in case of a tie, Puleio would have won – and the absence of councilor Rosanna Natoli, whose preference would have gone to the deputy prosecutor of Catania, but did not vote after the complaint of judge Maria Fascetto Sivillo, was decisive.

The Catania Prosecutor’s Office risks losing three deputy prosecutors soon – Agata Consoli, Andrea Bonomo, and Giuseppe Sturiale – who have participated in a second-level competition to move to the General Prosecutor’s Office of the same city.

Francesco Puleio entered the judiciary in 1986, has been a judge at the Caltagirone Court since December 1987. Then, in July 1989, he became deputy prosecutor in Catania. In September 2009, he held the position of prosecutor in Modica (Ragusa) and, since the closure of the judicial office in September 2013, he has been a deputy prosecutor in Ragusa. Since October 2016, he has been a deputy prosecutor in Catania.
