Convictions for leaders and henchmen of a clan imposing protection money in Misilmeri.

Judge Ivana Vassallo has sentenced three mafia members arrested during the Fenice operation conducted by the Carabinieri of the Misilmeri company. They were accused of being the leaders and henchmen of the crime family near Palermo. Salvatore Baiamonte, 51 years old, was sentenced to 11 years and 8 months, Alessandro Ravesi, 46 years old, to 12 years and 4 months, and Cosimo Michele Sciarabba, 44 years old, to 13 years and 4 months. The investigation revealed the involvement of several non-profit organizations in the transportation of the sick and funeral services. The extortion attempts were exposed by two entrepreneurs supported by Addiopizzo. The judge granted a provisional compensation to the two small business owners who acted as civil parties. The arrests were made possible thanks to footage captured by one of the harassed entrepreneurs on a mobile phone. Addiopizzo states that the case demonstrates the possibility of safely reporting and breaking free from extortion even in the province of Palermo, where the control of Cosa Nostra over the territory remains strong.
