Commemoration of the dead, at the cemetery of S. Ursola new timetables and enhanced vigilance

The cemetery of S. Orsola is preparing for the next commemoration of the dead. From 27 to 29 October it will be closed to the public for extraordinary cleaning. It will reopen from 30 October with open hours (7.30-16.30) until 7 November. This was announced by Salvatore Damiano, archiepiscopal commissioner of the Camposanto di Santo Spirito Foundation, who highlighted “the commitment to guaranteeing full compliance with anti-Covid regulations in the cemetery area”.

The Foundation is preparing entry routes separate from those of exit; the rationalization of the accesses in order to avoid gatherings inside and outside the cemetery area; the measurement of the inlet temperature; about thirty civil protection volunteers to invite visitors to use the mask correctly and to carry out a security service inside. This year’s novelty is the creation of new information material and, in particular, of a dozen “totems” placed between the avenues and which will report useful information and notes to learn about the history of the oldest cemetery in the city and to orient yourself. For the days dedicated to the commemoration of the dead, from 31 October to 2 November 2021 (until 11 am) the burials will be suspended and the entry of hearses will not be allowed. In terms of services, visitors will have at their disposal: an additional desk for reporting faults in votive lamps; a medical center with ambulances and resuscitation; chemical toilets for the disabled and non-disabled, located throughout the cemetery area; assistance and support for the disabled and people with walking difficulties at entrances and in front of lifts; a refreshment point in the corridor between the two entrances to the cemetery and a reinforced security and assistance service. Tank trucks will then be available to support the drinking fountains and emergency response teams will be employed for votive lamps and toilet cleaning. On November 1 in the church of Santo Spirito, inside the cemetery of S. Ursola, Eucharistic liturgies will be celebrated at 9, 10.30 and 12. On November 2, however, Masses will be at 9, 11 and 12. In particular, that of 9 am will be chaired by the Archbishop of Palermo, Corrado Lorefice.
