Collapse of Palermo-Agrigento viaduct, 9 defendants prescription
The collapse of the Scorciavacche viaduct on the Palermo-Agrigento highway in December 2014 angered former Prime Minister Matteo Renzi. The viaduct had opened without inspection and remained standing from Christmas 2014 until New Year’s 2015. Now, after nine years, due to the statute of limitations, the ANAS executives and company representatives involved in the construction have stepped out of the scene, leaving the former ANAS president, Pietro Ciucci, and other executives to face trial. The trial was moved to Palermo after a lengthy legal battle over jurisdiction. The collapse of the viaduct occurred one week after its inauguration, but fortunately, no one was injured.
