Cleanup of asbestos begins at Sciacca restaurant after fire

The procedures to secure the area of Sciacca, where the fire destroyed the restaurant-pizzeria “Al Porticello” on the waterfront of Stazzone, began yesterday afternoon, June 19th. After the presence of asbestos in the building was confirmed, the municipality commissioned a specialized company in asbestos remediation to address the environmental emergency caused by the flames.

The asbestos sheets among the remains of the restaurant were encapsulated to prevent the fibers from dispersing further. The remaining commercial activities, including equipment, refrigerators, and debris, are considered technically contaminated by asbestos. The opinion of ARPA technicians, who have arrived in Sciacca for an inspection, is awaited to determine if neighboring houses need to be evacuated. Currently, the civil protection of the municipality has only issued recommendations, the most important being to keep windows closed. Some residents have chosen to stay with friends and family.

The area has been cordoned off and closed to both pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Meanwhile, a citizens’ committee has announced a fundraising campaign to help the restaurant owner, Ignazio Marino, rebuild his restaurant.
