Citrus diseases: President of Sicilian red orange consortium calls for unity between Italy and Spain

The president of the consortium for the protection of Sicilian Igp red oranges, Gerardo Diana, has written a letter to the Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty, and Forests Francesco Lollobrigida and to the Spanish Minister of Agriculture Luis Planas, requesting a meeting and urging for a European intervention to raise awareness against phytopathies coming from non-European countries that could put the production of Italy and Spain at risk. Diana highlights the threat of the citrus greening disease, already present in Spain and recently found in Italy and Cyprus, as well as the danger of the Citrus Black Spot from South Africa. He emphasizes the need for new measures and phytosanitary barriers to protect European citrus cultivation and proposes a meeting to discuss prevention strategies with the ministers and representatives of the citrus protection consortiums.
