Catania, “Safe Stations Operation: extraordinary checks in Sicilian stations

Three hundred ninety-nine people checked, 108 bags inspected, 2 high penalties, in 42 stations. This is the balance sheet of the second day of the year called “Safe Stations Operation”, carried out by the Railway Police of Sicily yesterday which saw 96 agents engaged throughout the island.

The operation is aimed at preventing and countering any illegal actions by malicious people and was also conducted with the use of metal detectors and, in the Palermo station, of anti-drug and anti-explosive dog units of the local police headquarters, and in those of Catania and Messina of police dogs of the police headquarters of the Etna capital.

In Palermo, the Polfer operators, thanks to the help of police dogs “King” and “Ulla”, found on a young man, on board the regional train leaving for Messina, a modest quantity of hashish, hidden inside a pack of cigarettes.

The activity, which saw the collaboration of the RFI Company Protection staff, was coordinated by the operations room of the Railway Police which deployed the patrols on the territory, with particular attention to the rest and departure areas of the suburban buses and the train platforms.
