Taking advantage of the presence of some scaffolding in a courtyard and a partially open window, a fifty-five-year-old man allegedly broke into a hotel room in the historic center of Catania where a 59-year-old tourist from Malta was sleeping. He reportedly stole her purse containing 6,200 euros in 50-euro banknotes and a brand-new 10-pound note before fleeing. The man, who was under house arrest at the time, has been charged with theft and resisting a public official. After the victim reported the theft, the Carabinieri (Italian military police) used surveillance footage to identify the thief and subsequently found the stolen money and the 10-pound note at his home. The man attempted to escape and even tried to shut the Carabinieri in his bedroom, but they managed to apprehend him. The stolen items were returned to the victim, who expressed disbelief at recovering the money and gratitude towards the Carabinieri for their help.
