Catania: Attempted Bike Theft and Assault; perpetrator arrested by carabinieri.
The Carabinieri of the Mobile Unit of the Provincial Command of Catania arrested a twenty-year-old foreigner living in Belpasso for robbery. The incident occurred during lunchtime when a young delivery rider for a well-known food delivery company was instructed to pick up an order for a customer from a fast-food restaurant in Piazza Stesicoro. The rider parked his electric bike outside the restaurant and went in to collect the order. While waiting, he noticed another young man his age attempting to steal his bike by cutting its chain with bolt cutters. The rider immediately tried to stop the thief and fought him off, causing the thief to flee on foot without being able to complete the theft. Luckily, a patrol car from the Mobile Unit of the Provincial Command of Catania happened to be passing by and witnessed the incident. They apprehended the robber as he was trying to escape through the alleys after punching the rider. Medical assistance was called for the rider, who suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital. The robber was arrested and placed in custody, with the judicial authorities confirming the arrest and imposing a restriction on his movements.
