Candidate assaulted and injured as Campobello di Licata rally ends in brawl
A electoral rally ended in a brawl in Campobello di Licata, in the province of Agrigento. It happened yesterday evening (June 5) in Piazza XX Settembre during the rally of mayoral candidate Vito Terrana.
The candidate for the municipal council of the Democratic Party, Angelo La Greca, running in support of candidate Antonio Pitruzzella, was attacked with kicks and punches. According to reports, La Greca intervened to break up a fight between another candidate for the municipal council and a technician. La Greca was attacked from behind, sustaining injuries to a knee and receiving medical treatment at Barone Lombardo Hospital in Canicattì. His wife was also injured.
Solidarity with La Greca came from various Pd representatives. Deputies Giovanna Iacono and Peppe Provenzano and Senator Antonio Nicita expressed concern for the events in Campobello di Licata and offered support to La Greca and his wife, as well as to the Pd in Campobello. They stated that the incident was a result of a political climate that has become unbearable.
Giuseppe Lupo, Democratic Party candidate for the upcoming European elections, condemned the incident and called for law enforcement to investigate and restore a climate of safety and democratic civility.
Reactions also came from Campobello. Mayoral candidate Antonio Pitruzzella strongly condemned the act and called for clarification from authorities. The other mayoral candidate, Vito Terrana, also condemned the violence and expressed support for all those involved. All four mayoral candidates signed a document dissociating themselves from the events of June 5 and urging their supporters to moderate their behavior during the ongoing election campaign.
The Democratic Party of Palma di Montechiaro attached a photo calling for political discourse to remain free of violence.
