The benches have been removed from the municipal park in Campobello di Mazara to prevent migrants from camping there. The decision was made by Mayor Giuseppe Castiglione after a group of economic migrants had been staying in the park, waiting to find a place to sleep. During the olive picking season, hundreds of migrants come to the town and in the past, they were housed in a camp set up by the municipality with funds from the Region. However, this year the prefect of Trapani has stated that the Region cannot finance the setup, management, and dismantling of the camp. The local government does not have the necessary funds and there is a risk that the camp will not be opened. Earlier this year, the prefecture ordered the eviction of migrants living illegally in the “Calcestruzzi Selinunte” cement factory in Castelvetrano. Recently, economic migrants in Campobello di Mazara marched in protest, demanding accommodation to sleep.
