Bruno Petkovic, the avenger of Brazil who came close to Serie A with Trapani

Ten years ago Bruno Petkovic played for Catania. Hardly anyone knew Brazil’s executioner at the World Cup. Because that’s what it’s about. The Croatia striker scored just when Brazil thought they had made it through to the semi-final. But no. The striker born in Metkovic, in the extreme south of Croatia, on the border with Bosnia, found the right coordination at the penalty spot and with his left foot he designed an impossible parabola for Alisson, thanks to Marquinos’ deflection. It’s Croatia’s draw. The moment that affects and decides the quarter-final. Because the chess national team won on penalties (5-3), again thanks to their goalkeeper Livakovic, but above all for that goal by Petkovic.

An accidental hero Petkovic who cut his teeth in Italian minor football. Varese after Catania, Reggiana in LegaPro, then Serie B again with Virtus Entella and especially Trapani.

In the crowded city they remember Croatian well. He arrived on the last day of the 2016 winter transfer market and showed up at the press conference in a pajama-like shirt. One of the ugliest seen in Trapani, frankly. He spoke little, was a bit indolent, seemed listless on the pitch, but he entered the heart of the grenade fans with an amen. And not just because he was part of that incredible team that with Serse Cosmi on the bench came close to Serie A in the playoff against Massimo Oddo’s Pescara.

«Petkovic must be pampered and understood – Cosmi said of him -. I have coached many strong strikers, one above all Milito, but one like Bruno, who changed the face of his team so much, I’ve never found anywhere else. I always told him that it didn’t make sense for him to play in Serie B. He had everything, truly everything, to stay in Serie A ».

In A Petkovic arrived with Bologna where Trapani placed him for just over a million, but giving oxygen to the company coffers. There is little left, just another half season with Verona and then the return home. With Dinamo Zagreb he faced Milan twice this year in the Champions League. The first appearance for the national team in 2019, there are 27 so far, and just 7 goals. What a career is worth, however, he scored at the age of 28 against Brazil. Sorry if it’s too little.
