Bidding opens for building Augusta bypass: 121 million euro project

The article explains that Rete Ferroviaria Italiana has published a call for tenders for the executive design and construction of the Augusta Railway Bypass on the Catania-Siracusa route. The project, with a budget of around 121 million euros funded by PNRR funds, aims to reduce travel times by replacing 7 km of historic railway track with a new 2.8 km route outside the city of Augusta. The current railway passes through the protected area of the Saline di Augusta and has three level crossings within the city, which will be eliminated with the new project. Additionally, a plan to redevelop the area around the railway site is being developed, focusing on cultural and environmental aspects. The project is expected to be completed by 2026 and is overseen by Commissioner Filippo Palazzo. The regional government praises the project for its positive impact on travel times and the local area.
