Behind-the-scenes photos of The Leopard displayed in the square in Ciminna: featuring Alain Delon and Claudia Cardinale in the shots

The article talks about the upcoming sixth edition of the Gattopardo Prize, which will take place on Saturday, August 24th, at 9:30 pm in Piazza Mattarella, Ciminna. The event will showcase twelve panels from the largest photography exhibition dedicated to Luchino Visconti’s masterpiece “The Leopard”, organized by the BCsicilia Association in Ciminna and the Donnafugata Gattopardo study center.

The exhibition, which can be viewed for free at the museum on Via Roma 88 in Ciminna, features over 300 images that tell the story of the making of the movie in Ciminna in the sixties, transformed by Visconti into the Donnafugata of Tomasi di Lampedusa’s famous novel. The panels include behind-the-scenes photos from Titanus, the National Museum of Cinema in Turin, the Central Library of the Sicilian Region in Palermo, and private collections.

The exhibition follows a chronological itinerary, starting from the initial surveys by the Titanus patron Goffredo Lombardo, set photographer Giuseppe Rotunno, and Gioacchino Tomasi Lanza, through the construction of the set of the imaginary Donnafugata: the prince’s palace, the balcony of the square, the municipal palace, and the Sedara house. It also includes photos of the arrival of actors like Paolo Stoppa, Rina Morelli, and Claudia Cardinale in Ciminna.

Additionally, the exhibition highlights the entrance of the Salina family into the village, the procession, the singing of the Te Deum in the church. The second part features photos of the social life of the Prince and the people of Donnafugata, including scenes of the Bella Gigogin song, the procession, the plebiscite, and the arrival and departure of Count Chevalley. It also includes scenes with the mayor’s daughter, Angelica, played by Claudia Cardinale, and outdoor scenes in the countryside of Donnafugata showing the Prince hunting with Ciccio Tumeo.

Finally, the exhibition includes a backstage section with behind-the-scenes photos of the film, showcasing director Luchino Visconti instructing Burt Lancaster on how to attack Ciccio Tumeo and applying talcum powder to Rina Morelli’s face to make the carriage journey to Donnafugata look more realistic. Other photos show the intricate work behind the cameras and the many people involved as extras, makeup artists, photographers, and electricians. These moments capture an adventure that will never be seen on the big screen.
