Carabinieri from Fiumefreddo di Sicilia have arrested a 70-year-old retiree from Mascali and reported a 53-year-old man from Linguaglossa. Both are accused of arson. The retiree from Mascali was arrested after the carabinieri received phone calls from employees of a nursery in the Feotto district. When they arrived at the scene, they noticed a man in a Ford Focus. Upon searching him, they found a lighter in his pants. According to the military, the elderly man had started multiple fires in neighboring areas, including an avocado field, by setting dry weeds on fire without even getting out of his vehicle. The arrival of the firefighters prevented the flames from spreading further, just meters away from a residential complex where residents had tried to contain the fire with makeshift means. The 53-year-old man from Linguaglossa was reported by the carabinieri after being caught on surveillance cameras setting fire to palm trees and a flowerbed in a public green area on Via Regina del Cielo in Fiumefreddo. The flames were extinguished by residents and firefighters. Upon searching the suspect, they found nine lighters and a small container of gasoline on him.
