Armao testifies at Montante trial: “Confindustria pressured for Irfis funds to go to waste companies”

The waste sector is and continues to be a very delicate sector in the service industry that focuses on a partly regional and partly local government ownership. This was stated by former regional assessor Gaetano Armao, who was heard as a witness in the ongoing trial on the “Montante System” in Caltanissetta. The trial involves thirty defendants, including former Confindustria Sicilia leader Antonello Montante, politicians, industrialists, and law enforcement officials. Armao was questioned about the period when he was assessor in the government led by Raffaele Lombardo. He mentioned the pressure exerted by the Catanzaro group, pushing for regional funds to be allocated to waste companies. This was to support the struggling local communities and prevent the waste system from collapsing. The businessman Giuseppe Catanzaro is one of the defendants in the trial.
