The president of the Italian Association of Magistrates (ANM), Giuseppe Santalucia, commented on the controversy surrounding a video of a judge expressing her views on immigration. Santalucia stated that the video, which was taken five years ago but resurfaced recently, should not distract from the gravity of the judge’s actions. He questioned why the video was shared now instead of immediately, suggesting that it may be due to dissatisfaction with the judge’s decisions. Santalucia emphasized that participation in demonstrations is a constitutional right, even for judges, and that their involvement in public life should not be seen as political activism. He argued that judges should be able to engage in discussions and debates on legal issues without fear of being criticized or negatively portrayed in the media. Santalucia concluded by questioning where judges will be able to express their opinions if they are not allowed to participate in public events.
