Adrano man caught by police transporting lambs on hot metal sheets

The Adrano police, during a routine territorial control operation, caught a 38-year-old man from Tortorici transporting animals in poor conditions inside a non-authorized and unsuitable van. The man was reported for animal abuse by the officers of the Adrano Public Security Department, who intercepted him along the state road 284.

The man was driving back to Tortorici in a closed van that was stopped and checked by the police. Inside, three lambs of about four months old and a ten-day-old calf were found in a state of suffering, with tied legs, lying on the floor of the vehicle in a cramped space without ventilation, in suffocating heat.

The disrespectful and incompatible conditions for animal transport were immediately evident, especially considering that even the ventilation inside the van was obstructed by hot metal sheets due to the high temperatures of recent days.

The police officers immediately freed the animals and removed the metal panel to allow for more favorable conditions while waiting for the intervention of ASP veterinary staff, who provided care to the animals, especially to the calf with a visible abscess. Additionally, the absence of ear tags or identification marks necessary for animal tracking was noted during the checks, so specific species identification marks were appled and the animals were administratively seized and transferred with a suitable and authorized vehicle.

The officers also carried out checks on all the necessary documentation required by law for the transport of live animals, revealing the total absence of accompanying documents and authorization for animal transport in the van. Therefore, the driver was fined accordingly and as the owner of the animals, he was reported for animal abuse, a crime punishable by imprisonment from three to eighteen months and a fine of 5,000 to 30,000 euros under article 544 of the Penal Code.
