A new tariff for the regional train service in the Messina urban area. The Musumeci government proposes it to Trenitalia. This is a preparatory initiative for the project of an integrated ticket with the other means of public transport operating in the city of the Strait. Interested are the eleven stations that go from the south to the center: Giampilieri, San Paolo, Ponte Schiavo, Santo Stefano, Galati, Mili Marina, Tremestieri, Contesse, Fiumara, Gazzi and central Messina. The costs are as follows: single ticket, 1.50 euros; weekly pass, 10 euros; monthly, 35 euros; annual 350 euros.
«We want more and more – underlines the president of the Region Nello Musumeci – to encourage passengers to use the public transport, also to relieve traffic congestion in large centers. This is a first important step to move quickly towards an overall tariff integration, bringing Messina closer to the other metropolitan cities of the island ».
Already last December, the regional government approved the experimental introduction of securities integrated travel systems that allow access to all regional trains and bus and tram services managed by Atm, the municipal transport company of Messina. To finance this initiative, a part (one hundred thousand euros) of the penalties applied to Trenitalia for non-compliance with the 2017/2026 service contract for public rail transport of local regional interest was allocated by the Region.
«The goal – adds the regional councilor for transport Marco Falcone – is to start the tariff integration between trains and buses, much awaited by citizens, by next March, starting from a two-euro ticket for a train ride and 100 minutes by bus. We worked on this solution together with Trenitalia and the Municipality of Messina, through a decisive financial contribution, to relaunch the Peloritana subway and put it in synergy with the buses through well-calibrated timetables and journeys. We are also allocating resources on some redevelopment of the stations. We are convinced that by guaranteeing efficient and convenient services after years of non-communicating systems, users will respond in the best possible way, triggering a virtuous process of strengthening public mobility in Messina and reducing traffic volumes ».
