In the general surgery department of Lentini Hospital, directed by Giovanni Trombatore, an exceptional surgery was performed to remove a 5kg retroperitoneal tumor mass from a 56-year-old woman. Over the course of a year, she had noticed an increase in abdominal size, accompanied by progressive weight loss, subocclusive crises, and anemia. Trombatore notes that the exceptional nature of the surgery comes from the rarity of the pathology, the large size of the mass (40 cm by 28 cm by 24 cm), and the delicate surgical maneuvers required due to the close proximity of the tumor to vascular structures and vital organs. The successful outcome of the surgery was made possible by the coordination between the departments of General Surgery, Anesthesia and Intensive Care, Transfusion Center, and Radiodiagnostics. The commissioner of the Health Authority of Siracusa, Salvatore Lucio Ficarra, commends the surgical team and all the units involved for their synergy in achieving these brilliant results. He emphasizes that the investments in advanced technology and the presence of highly skilled professionals in all areas in hospitals throughout the province allow citizens to have trust in finding increasingly appropriate responses to their health needs in their own territory.
