Palermo, commemorating the deceased: initiatives, services, and cemetery hours at Sant’Orsola

Explain in brief the following article
A small candle will be given to visitors of the Sant’Orsola cemetery in Palermo on the days dedicated to the commemoration of the deceased. “A small candle may seem like a small thing – as lawyer Salvatore Damiano, archdiocesan commissioner of the Santo Spirito Cemetery Foundation, is keen to point out – but when lit in a cemetery, it becomes a symbol of affection, remembrance, and hope that everyone has for their deceased loved ones.”

To better accommodate visitors, the cemetery on Via del Vespro will be closed on October 29, 30, and 31 for extraordinary cleaning and space arrangement. In addition, informative material (brochures and panels) has been prepared, as well as various totems placed between the lanes, with directions and useful information to navigate and learn about the history of the city’s oldest cemetery.

From November 1st to 3rd, the cemetery will be open from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm. On these dates, being Saturday and holidays, no burials will take place and the entrance of funeral cars will not be allowed. Visitors will have access to an additional counter for reporting faults in the votive lamps; a medical station with ambulance and emergency medical vehicles; a dozen chemical toilets for disabled and non-disabled individuals distributed throughout the cemetery area; assistance and support for disabled and mobility-impaired individuals at the cemetery entrances (free wheelchairs and service vehicles) and in front of the elevators in the shrines, a refreshment point in the corridor between the two entrances of the cemetery, as well as reinforced security and assistance services.

Volunteers from the San Marco Palermo Civil Protection Association, surveillance units, doctors and nurses, Ksm security guards at all entrances, and emergency response teams for votive lamps and toilet cleaning will be deployed. On November 1st, in the church of Santo Spirito inside the Sant’Orsola cemetery, masses will be celebrated at 9:00 am, 10:30 am, and 12:00 pm. On the 2nd, the celebrations will be at 9:00 am, 11:00 am, and 12:00 pm. In particular, the 9:00 am mass will be presided over by the Archbishop of Palermo, Monsignor Corrado Lorefice. On November 3rd, the schedule of religious functions will be as follows: 9:00 am, 10:30 am, and 12:00 pm.
